About Munich and LMU

Munich, or München in German, is a vibrant and culture-rich metropolis, located on the River Isar some 80 kilometers north of the Bavarian Alps. Home to approximately 1.5 million people, Munich is the largest city in Bavaria and the third largest in Germany. It is a major center for higher education, research, technology, culture, and the media.

The Munich metropolitan region is distinguished by its distinct economic position, which is the most powerful of any German city. As the main economic center in southern Germany, six of the 30 DAX-listed companies (BMW, Siemens, Allianz, Munich Re, Linde, Infineon) have their headquarters in or near Munich. The Munich metropolitan area's core industries are automotive, (re-)insurance, high-tech and electronics, software, biotechnology, professional services, and, of course, media.

Munich's location within its urban flair, its rich palette of cultural institutions, and the wide range of leisure activities available attract visitors from all over the world. The typical Bavarian beer gardens, gastronomy and pub scene, for example in the "Glockenbach" neighborhood, or the numerous parks, such as the English Garden next to LMU, all invite visitors to enjoy the city. Munich is a European cultural center, with renowned museums and galleries, theater and festivals, art and music. Munich's uniqueness is enhanced by its proximity to the Bavarian Alps and the variety of lakes, castles, and leisure activities in the surrounding countryside.

Digital Hub Munich

While it is home to several major corporate players, Munich, also known as Isar Valley, is also well-known for its start-up scene. The city serves as a great gateway for start-ups, due to its extensive network of companies and business angels, as well as its strong presence in the media and internet sectors.

In Munich, there are numerous opportunities for new entrepreneurs to find assistance. For example, LMU Entrepreneurship Center aims to inspire potential founders while also nurturing existing and promising start-up ideas. The CDTM (Center for Digital Technology & Management) is a interdisciplinary offer, aiming to promote engaged and talented students in the fields of innovation, product development and entrepreneurship. A non-university related initiative is WERK1, which is a multifaceted center supporting digital entrepreneurship in the Munich area. Similarly to this service, BayStartUP offers start-ups help throughout the founding process.

As a result, Munich offers a diverse range of opportunities for emerging business concepts, particularly in the digital sector.
