LMU climbs to 34th in the THE World University Rankings 2026

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) remains among the global elite: in the latest THE World University Rankings 2026, LMU ranks 34th worldwide—an improvement of four places compared to last year. Among the three German universities in the Top 50, LMU is the only one that moved up.

LMU also stands out in the European field: among the nine European institutions in the Top 50 are ETH Zurich (11), EPFL (35), LMU Munich (34), as well as our Munich partner TUM (27) and Heidelberg (49).

The global picture shows continued dominance by universities in the United States and the United Kingdom. Germany is represented by eight institutions in the Top 100 and 18 in the Top 200—its lowest count since 2015. Against this backdrop, LMU’s upward move is even more significant.

At a glance

  • European Top 50: Alongside LMU, listings include ETH Zurich, EPFL, TUM, and Heidelberg.
