We are thrilled to announce that Ambre Nicolle has been awarded the prestigious Strategy Research Foundation (SRF) grant for her project: "Corporate Strategy in the Platform Economy: Organizations of Organizations and Competitive Dynamics."
This project, with Ambre Nicolle as the Principal Investigator (PI) and ISTO alumnus Johannes Loh as the Co-Investigator (CI), explores the strategic dynamics of platforms and their impact on organizational structures and competition.
Congratulations to Ambre and Johannes on this remarkable achievement! We look forward to the impactful contributions this research will bring to the field of strategic management.
Summary of the project: In recent years, the ubiquity of digital platforms has transformed (media) industries and reshaped competitive landscapes. This research project delves into how platforms, sometimes described as "organizations of organizations" orchestrate large ecosystems through governance structures that regulate participation while capturing value through various means, including subscriptions and data-driven services. The research project will specifically examine the competitive dynamics between subscription-based platforms, such as Microsoft's GamePass, and traditional platforms like Steam in the PC video game industry. The main research questions are: How does the entry of subscription-based platforms affect the performance of complementors on traditional platforms? And how do these effects vary among different types of complementors? This study aims to document how shifts toward subscription models affect producers by analyzing game sales, pricing, and platform affiliations at a fine-grained level. It particularly focuses on boundary conditions, complementors' characteristics, and competitive responses.Ambre Nicolle
