A new benchmark in digital teaching: the “Digital Markets and Platforms.” project

At a time when the digital transformation is changing every area of life, education is also undergoing fundamental change. An outstanding example of this is the project of a digital course format “Digital Markets and Platforms”, initiated and carried out by the Institute for Strategy, Technology and Organization (ISTO) under the direction of Prof. Dr. Tobias Kretschmer. This innovative course format sets new standards in digital teaching and combines theoretical knowledge with empirical findings from current studies.

Modular structure and extensive content

The course offers over fifteen hours of video material, around 550 slides and references to more than one hundred scientific papers. These are divided into three main blocks: Fundamentals, Platform and Ecosystem Dynamics, and Digital Markets. Each block is divided into six sub-modules that allow detailed exploration of each topic. An interactive mind map and video subtitles provide additional flexibility and accessibility for learners.

Origins and teamwork

Since May 2022, a dedicated team at ISTO, led by Prof. Dr. Tobias Kretschmer with contributions from Safia Bouacha, Ambre Nicolle and Joy Wu, supported by the media experts from MEDIASchool Bayern, has been working intensively on the development and production of the course. Filming began in December 2023 and lasted several months, using a variety of locations such as the Deutsches Museum and professional studios. A total of 85 videos were produced, which clearly convey the course content.
The team also received a large grant from the Virtual University of Bavaria (VHB) as well as generous support from LMU Management Alumni and the LMU Munich School of Management (SOM).

Broad application and future integration

The pilot project will be used in three courses: a VHB Classic course for university students, a VHB Open course for a broader audience and a digital course for LMU students. These courses will start in September 2024 and integrate state-of-the-art teaching methods to meet the needs of different target groups. At the SOM, a lot of content has already been made available via LMU Cast in the course “Management and Economics of Platforms” in the summer semester 2024. Next year, this content will be integrated into the new course “Digital Markets”, which will be offered from winter 2025/2026. The videos will also be available in Moodle to enhance interactivity and engagement through additional pedagogical tools such as quizzes and readings.

Exciting content and current topics

The course covers topics such as network effects, platform ecosystems, big data and artificial intelligence. It discusses the challenges and opportunities arising from digital transformation and provides valuable insights into data-driven business models and regulatory issues.

New standards in digital education

The “Digital Markets and Platforms” project at LMU Munich is setting new standards in digital education. With an innovative, modular approach and comprehensive content, it offers students and professionals alike valuable knowledge and skills to be successful in the digital economy.

You can read a detailed report on this mega-project in our new faculty magazine “Insights” published in october 2024.
