The European Commission plans to soften key regulations of its sustainability strategy. Prof. Dr. Ali Aslan Gümüşay explains why he and other researchers view this step critically: instead of a scientifically grounded and participatory process, the so-called Omnibus package arrives unexpectedly and introduces far-reaching changes—such as raising the reporting threshold from 500 to 1,000 employees and removing numerous indicators. Whether this truly increases efficiency or dilutes the EU’s sustainability policy remains uncertain.
A joint statement was also recently published, already signed by over 400 European business scholars—with support continuing to grow. The researchers emphasize: sustainability relies on information and accountability. Reporting and due diligence are not “red tape,” but the transparency infrastructure needed to direct capital effectively and manage risks.
