Teaching

Our courses familiarize students with the environments, opportunities and challenges of a globalized and increasingly virtual business world.

In our lectures, we illustrate theoretical models with current examples and real-life case studies to encourage critical reflection on the topics. We also integrate international guest lecturers from business and academia into our course program.

Our seminars teach students how to interpret the latest research findings and how to develop practical recommendations on this basis. We expect active participation in the discussion from all students. This not only fosters sustainable learning, but also develops your ability to co-create and present ideas.

All our courses are held in English, the lingua franca of globalized business

Prerequisites

You can find general information regarding the bachelor thesis and its requirements on the website of the business administration faculty’s examination office (ISC).

Process

Before applying for a bachelor thesis in International Management, we strongly recommend you to attend the seminar Cross-Cultural Management, which we will offer both during the winter and the summer term with varying topics. This seminar imparts important knowledge and skills for writing an academic thesis.

Having successfully completed this seminar, you are guaranteed the supervision of your bachelor thesis at the Professorship for International Management

Specific application deadlines apply at the end of each semester. Applications for bachelor theses in the summer term 2024 are due on February 26th, 2024 by 12pm (in the winter semester 2024/25 likely on August 23rd, 2024 by 12pm). On February 28th there will be a kickoff via Zoom for successful candidates from 10:00 am to 10:30 am (in the winter semester 2024/25, it is expected to be on August 27th, 2024 10:30 am to 11:00 am).

Please enclose the following documents in your application to intman@som.lmu.de:

You have eight weeks to complete your bachelor thesis. The start of your writing period can be arranged individually within certain limits.

Finding a topic

Bachelor theses at the Professorship for International Management are theoretical-conceptual in nature. Students are encouraged to develop their own topic proposals within our research areas. Please outline the research gap you want to target, mention relevant literature streams, explain your central research question and expected contributions to management theory and practice. You might draw inspiration for possible research questions from our courses or the textbook International Human Resource Management

You may also find research ideas in recent literature reviews published in leading academic journals.

We cannot guarantee that we will be able to supervise your suggested topic. If our topic negotiations are unsuccessful, you may try again in the following semester with a new topic.

Formalities

Bachelor theses at the Professorship for International Management are written in English. Please observe our guidelines for academic writing (PDF, 338 KB).

During your writing period, you will have to present your work in progress to Prof. Tenzer. This colloquium is mandatory for completing your bachelor thesis module.

Prerequisites

You can find general information regarding the master thesis and its requirements on the website of the business administration faculty’s examination office (ISC).

Process

Applications for master theses in the summer term 2024 are due on February 26th, 2024 by 12pm (in the winter semester 2024/25 likely on August 23rd, 2024 by 12pm).

Prior to registering your master thesis at the ISC, we will advise you in developing a theoretically fruitful, practically relevant and feasible thesis topic based on your research plan (see below). This process usually takes about 6-8 weeks. For empirical projects, this may vary depending on the availability of data. After registration at the ISC, you will have exactly 22 weeks to complete the master thesis. The registration date can be arranged individually within certain limits.

During your writing period, you will have to present your work in progress to Prof. Tenzer. This colloquium is mandatory for competing your master thesis module.

Finding a topic

We supervise both theoretical-conceptual and (preferably qualitative) empirical master theses. Students are encouraged to develop their own topic proposals within our research areas. In a one- to two-page research plan, please outline the research gap you want to target, cite relevant literature streams, explain your central research question, targeted methods and expected contributions to management theory and practice.

You might draw inspiration for possible research questions from our courses or the textbook International Human Resource Management. You may also find research ideas in recent literature reviews published in leading academic journals.

We cannot guarantee that we will be able to supervise your suggested topic. The number of master theses accepted at IM depends on the current capacity of the Professorship for International Management. Candidates will be selected based on the quality of their research plan.

Formalities

Master theses at the Professorship for International Management are written in English without exception. Please observe our guidelines for academic writing (PDF, 338 KB).

After individual agreement, the thesis can be written in cooperation with a company, if the academic and scientific requirements that apply to the title of Master of Science (M.Sc.) are met.

Here you find our guidelines and recommendations (PDF, 338 KB) for insights into

  • registration procedures for academic theses

Letters of Recommendation

Change content

We provide (up to 3) letters of recommendation only for applications to a specific institution and no generalized assessments.

To be eligible for a recommendation, you must have completed at least one interactive course at the professorship (seminar, bachelor thesis, or master thesis) with excellent results. Having participated in one of our lectures is insufficient.

To process your request, we need the following:

  • Statement of motivation: Where would you like to apply and why? Why are you a suitable candidate for this position or program? Why are we the right department to support you with a letter of recommendation?
  • List of the courses you have attended at the Professorship for International Management, including grades.
  • Current grade transcript incl. failed courses, graduation certificates if applicable.
  • Curriculum vitae and work references if applicable.
  • All forms required by the target organization, filled out in advance as far as possible.
  • Information on formalities: Deadline for the letter of recommendation, recipient with full postal or email address, language (German/English), and formal requirements. Will you send the letter yourself or should we send it to the recipient directly?

Please read the above requirements carefully. If you meet all of them, please send all required documents to intman@som.lmu.de. We will then check your eligibility and subsequently contact you to discuss the next steps.

Please ensure sufficient time for this process! It may take several weeks to complete a letter of recommendation.
