A research seminar offered by theInstitute for Innovation Management (IIM), LMU Munich School of Managementand theLMU Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (IEC) in coordination withEUGLOH – European University Alliance for Global Health @ LMUand thePh.D. Program Medical Research in Epidemiology & Public Health

This research seminar combines a panel discussion (moderated by Prof. Dr. Jelena Spanjol, LMU) with a presentation of research projects, exploring how medical/health and business/marketing researchers can collaborate on interdisciplinary projects. The seminar will highlight the opportunities and benefits as well as challenges and costs of research partnerships across very different disciplines. Practical tips will be given on ways to navigate the complexities, along with examples of interdisciplinary research. The seminar will be given by Dr. Lisa Sharp of the University of Illinois Chicago (Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Biobehavioral Nursing Science in the College of Nursing) and Dr. Cheryl Nakata of the University of North Carolina Greensboro (Joseph M. Bryan Chair of Innovation and Professor of Marketing at the Bryan School of Business and Economics). The two presenters have been working together with several others on interdisciplinary studies for more than a decade.

Speaker Biographies

Cheryl Nakata holds the Joseph M. Bryan Distinguished Chair in Innovation and is Professor of Marketing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Prior to academia, she worked in new product innovation and marketing research positions at Kraft and General Mills, as well as in international marketing and business development roles in the U.S. and China, including running her own consultancy. She teaches innovation at graduate and undergraduate levels, studies health, well-being, and consumption disadvantage; global innovation; design thinking approaches; marketing strategy; and national culture. Her research has received awards from the American Marketing Association and the Academy of Marketing Science, and been published in the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Social Science & Medicine, and the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, among others. She is currently Associate Editor at the Journal of Product Innovation Management and on six editorial boards (two FT 50) and was formerly PDMA Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Lisa Sharp is Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Biobehavioral Nursing Science in the College of Nursing at the University of Illinois Chicago. She has utilized her training as both a nurse and a clinical health psychologist in conducting a range of health-related research within the healthcare system and out in communities, but always on a multidisciplinary team. Her work utilizes the lens of social determinants of health exploring the contexts in which health happens. Particularly because of her expertise in applying mixed research methods to the development of patient-centered behavioral interventions, she is sought out as a mentor by junior faculty in medicine. Lisa has maintained funding thru the National Institutes of Health as a principal investigator for over 15 years and collaborated on numerous additional projects. She has published over 150 articles in medical journals.
