Course description and structure

Course content

The seminar offers students an overview of the principles, conditions, methods and approaches of social innovation and foresight.

The seminar is divided into three sections:

  • Overview and implications of social innovations,

  • impact and evaluation of social innovations and

  • introducing the exploration of futures.

Course structure

The first section concerns the emergence and diffusion of social innovations. Approaches and concepts for understanding organizational and systemic conditions facilitating and impeding social innovations are discussed.

The second section concerns the impact and measurement approaches of social innovations. The focus here lies on social and ecological impact and methods for evaluating them.

The third section discusses the basics of thinking about and dealing with futures. The focus is on methodological approaches and the practical application of scenario analysis.

Components of the seminar include student presentations of research articles and writing of a seminar paper.
