Content and course objectives

AI and algorithms are rapidly transforming the way organizations manage their workforce. Take Uber, for example, it uses AI to oversee around 7 million drivers across the globe. In this seminar, we’ll explore the emerging fields of Algorithmic Management and Algoactivism, examining their impact on both organizations and society. Algorithmic management refers to the use of algorithms to control, coordinate, and evaluate workers. In contrast, Algoactivism captures how workers push back, organizing and voicing concerns about these algorithmic systems.

The goal of the seminar is to understand how workers make sense of changes in algorithmic management practices. You’ll work in small teams using real-world data. We’ll provide you several datasets that you can explore. Data includes reviews form the iOS and Android App Stores about the Uber app, patent data from Uber as well as data from the uberpeople.net forum. Through this, you’ll draw theoretical and practical insights from people’s experiences, as shared in online reviews.

Using computational text analysis methods, you’ll learn how to work with large-scale textual data and uncover hidden (latent) topics, giving you valuable skills in both research and data analytics.
