Title: Patient Risk Stratification through a Causal Lens
Abstract: It is estimated that in up to a third of in-hospital deaths patients develop sepsis, the body’s overwhelming response to infection. Given the significant morbidity associated with sepsis, many clinical decision-support tools for estimating risk of sepsis have been developed, yet few have made a significant impact. In this talk, the speaker will present hypotheses for why such tools have in large part failed to have any meaningful impact on patient outcomes. Furthermore, she will propose potential solutions that incorporate causal reasoning into patient risk stratification.
About the Speaker: Jenna Wiens is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Associate Director of the Artificial Intelligence Lab, and Co-Director of Precision Health at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Her primary research interests lie at the intersection of machine learning and healthcare. Wiens received her PhD from MIT in 2014, received an NSF CAREER award in 2016, was named to the MIT Tech Review’s list of Innovators Under 35 in 2017, was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship in Computer Science in 2020, and most recently received a Humboldt Research Award.
