Strategic Organization Design in Action: Guest Lecture by Angela Käufl & Marvin Loyal (Siemens)
7 Feb 2025
Siemens experts shared practical insights on organizational transformation, bridging theory and real-world application in our ISTO Bachelor's course.
On January 13, 2025, ISTO’s “Strategic Organization Design” bachelor course concluded on a high note: It was our great pleasure to welcome Angela Käufl (Head of P&O TO OD MD) and Marvin Loyal (Senior Consultant OrgDevelopment) from Siemens’ People & Organizations unit to give a guest lecture on their “practitioners’ insights” on organization design.
The course "Strategic Organization Design" deals with how organizations should be designed to achieve their strategic goals. Building on strategic and organizational concepts, it focuses on the interaction between these fields, addressing questions such as how to design for innovation or adapt to a changing environment. The goal is to provide students with a solid understanding of theoretical concepts, the most important methodological tools for analysis (e.g., econometric and case-based methods), and their application to real-world management questions.
Angela and Marvin provided a very engaging, interactive presentation, offering students a behind-the-scenes look at organization design in action at a leading multinational technology company. They shared insights from a real-world organizational transformation by showcasing an abstract case of two business units merging. This practical example brought the course’s strategic and organizational theories to life, demonstrating the complexities of designing organizations to adapt and thrive.
This guest lecture exemplifies the strong collaboration between ISTO and Siemens, extending to past semesters’ project courses where students tackle current industry challenges. These hands-on experiences highlight LMU Munich’s School of Management’s commitment to blending academic rigor with practical application, creating meaningful learning opportunities for students, research fellows, and industry partners alike.
