Research Interests

Prof. Dr. Jelena Spanjol’s research interests span multiple perspectives on and levels in innovation (see figure below). Central research theses pertain to innovation motivations, capabilities, and behaviors.

For example, how firms think about and interpret markets influences, their motivations to innovate, which in turn determine product novelty and success. Within firms, team dynamics strongly influence which and how innovation initiatives are initiated and implemented.

As firms do not innovate in isolation, the consumer/customer perspective is critical. Fully understanding and accounting for the user perspective is particularly important to innovation efforts in complex service systems such as health care.
