2 Oct 2025
Research associate Valentin Luz from the Institute for Finance & Banking at the LMU Munich School of Management wins the only German gold medal in the rowing pair at the Rowing World Championships.
Gold in Para-Rowing: Valentin Luz impresses on the water – and in everyday research
With a strong performance on the international stage, our research associate Valentin Luz won the gold medal in Para-Rowing. His victory is more than just a sporting achievement: it demonstrates how data-driven work, clear processes, and teamwork skills from research and teaching can be directly translated into top performance.
"It was my father who introduced me to rowing; back then, I was able to complete my first sessions on the banks of the Rhine in Wiesbaden."
The race – clearly planned, flawlessly executed
From the start, Luz maintained a controlled pace, kept his course steady, and accelerated decisively in the second half of the race. The result: a confident finish and gold. This achievement crowns a season in which he precisely coordinated training, project work, and teaching commitments.
Bridging the gap between boat and office: inancial thinking in competitive sports
At the institute, Luz works on data-driven financial questions: formulating hypotheses precisely, testing models, and continuously calibrating risks. He applies precisely this logic in training – from split times and technical feedback to regeneration management.
"I think it's fantastic that we prevailed."
Team & Environment as a Success Factor
Flexible coordination within teaching and research enabled smooth season planning – training, teaching schedules, and project milestones all meshed together. After winning gold, Luz is looking ahead to the next regattas – and, in parallel, to ongoing research and teaching projects at the institute. The goal remains to make performance measurable and sustainably improved.
The LMU Munich School of Management warmly congratulates Valentin and wishes him secure funding as well as continued courage and strength for his next races and his preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles!
